Ready to get started with Talend?

We all know that Talend Open Studio works well on Windows environment but what with Mac OS (OSX)?

With the most recent (6.0+) Talend provides MacOS application in the bundle which You can download from their site. Process is almost identical to the one on Windows. Simply download bundle, unzip it and run application:

However You must meet certain prerequisites to run Application properly. One of the most important is Java version and distribution. There is a high chance that You will receive error upon first running the application:

You will be lucky if You receive additional info in log. As You can see I received null.

How to check Java version Currently Installed?

The easiest way is to open up Terminal and run

You should receive something like javac 1.6.0_65.

It means that You are using JDK 6.You might find more information regarding finding Java version and Home directory using Terminal commands listed here http://stackoverflow.com/questions/14292698/how-to-check-if-java-jdk-installed-on-mac

Please note that for Talend 6+ You must use at least Java 7 with Talend Open Studio.

How to update Java?

Download

To update Java to most recent version, depending on Your Java version You may want to follow links:

  • for super old Java versions: https://support.apple.com/kb/DL1572
  • for something more recent (6+): https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT202678

After installation You should receive confirmation that Your current version is up to date:

Sometimes Terminal shows different version than the currently ‘freshest’ installed. Such situation may happen when You hav multiple JRE/JDK installed in the environment. Out of the box, Talend will see only the version specified in Java_home path. If You rerun terminal javac -version and still got the old one, it means that You have JRE installed instead of JDK. Installing full JDK usually solves the problem. Navigate to http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javase/downloads/index.html and download the latest JDK.dmg and install it.

After installation run

when 1.8 is the latest major version. After that, running javac -version should print the most recent one.

If You done everything properly, then You should be able to run Application from the unzipped folder
